I’ve had a thing going with Patti Smith for a couple of years. We saw her play the Olympia in Paris a few years back, shortly after I read Just Kids. The following Thanksgiving we saw her open for Neil Young in Montréal. She was recently in Paris doing an interview about the Mapplethorpe exhibit that’s currently at the Grand Palais. There are two Mapplethorpe shows in Paris. The other, smaller one is at the Musée Rodin. I was planning to see the Grand Palais show, but was then steered at the last minute by a local art historian to see the Rodin instead; it was fantastic. Having seen the show, the pairing seems obvious and natural, but I never would have thought of putting those two together – it’s a special show, one of the best things I saw. And the photo above, one of my favorites.
